Hurricane Melissa

Hurricane Melissa, a catastrophic Category 5 storm, made landfall in southwestern Jamaica on October 28, 2025. This storm is one of the strongest hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean, and the strongest to directly hit Jamaica in recorded history. Melissa pummeled Jamaica with sustained winds over 300 kilometers per hour, with the strongest gusts recorded at 406 kilometers per hour. The storm caused extensive damage, leading to the tragic loss of life, the loss of homes, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure.

Mount Ward Primary School was not spared and also experienced considerable damage.

Donations Pour in Amid COVID-19 Restrictions

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on everyone, and the Mount Ward Alumni Association is no different. In addition to dealing with the restrictions and uncertainty in our personal lives, the association has also faced challenges of its own.

For many years, the Mount Ward Alumni Association’s top fundraising effort has consistently been our annual banquet. Due to safety concerns and gathering restrictions imposed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 annual banquet regrettably had to be canceled.

The pandemic has changed many things about life as we know it. One thing that has not changed however, is the spirit of generosity of our members and supporters.

Finding alternative ways to support our worthwhile cause in lieu of our banquet was of utmost importance. Our supporters gave generously, as they always do, and donated funds, school supplies, study materials, and non-perishable food items which were then sent to Jamaica and distributed to the students and their families.

The Mount Ward Alumni Association would like to extend heartfelt and sincere thanks to you all for your continued support. We also wish you and your families continued health and happiness during these difficult and unprecedented times.

Thank you!

Workout to Help Out!

We recently held our first ever charity workout which was a great success! The event was hosted by CrossFit Vortex in Vaughan, in support of the Mount Ward Alumni Association and the Canadian Cancer Society.

Many thanks to CrossFit Vortex, as well as our family, friends, and community members for their support and generosity!

The event was a charity workout where participants competed in teams of three. The competition consisted of a 1200 metre row, followed by a series of body weight exercises such as sit-ups, lunges, squats, and burpees, which took teams anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes to complete. It was a fun day of friendly competition and camaraderie.

In addition to collecting non-perishable food items for the local food bank, all funds raised will be donated in support of the Mount Ward Primary School and the Canadian Cancer Society.
